Cook 'incredibly optimistic' over China Mobile iPhone agreement

China Mobile adds 3,000 outlets for iPhone 5s, 5c sales in China

Apple CEO Tim Cook is said to be "incredibly optimistic" over the multi-year agreement the company made with China Mobile last month. Ahead of the impending launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on the mobile phone network on January 17th, Cook hinted that there could be more collaboration between the carrier and Apple in the future.

"We've gotten to know each other, today is a beginning, and I think there are lots more things our companies can do together in the future," Cook said to the Wall Street Journal. Aside from this week's launch, this could involve future iterations of the iPhone, as well as cellular models of the iPad, being made available through the carrier.

The benefits of China Mobile are immediately apparent to Cook, advising "As of this weekend we will be selling iPhones in more than 3,000 additional locations. China Mobile already has a reach to many cities that Apple does not have a reach to." The initial groundwork for selling the iPhone to China Mobile's 763 million-subscriber base has already begun, with Foxconn said to have already shipped approximately 1.4 million iPhone 5s units to the carrier.

Though sales of the iPhone on China Mobile are expected to be considerably high in quantity, the launch has a number of factors working against it. China Unicom and China Telecom, competitors to China Mobile, have been selling the iPhone for years and will probably step up their efforts against the state-owned carrier. The price will also be a factor, as it will only be sold contract-free at a price higher than the US model, in a country where customers have considerably less spending power.
