Canaccord estimates 54M iPhones, 24.8M iPads in December quarter

iPhone 5s seen outselling 5c by 2 to 1

Apple may have sold 78 million or more iOS devices during the December quarter, according to estimates from Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. He argues that sales of the iPhone 5s and iPad Air -- Apple's flagship products -- were "strong" during the holidays, and is projecting a split of 54 million iPhones and 24.8 million iPads. Those numbers would represent year-over-year increases of 13 and 8 percent, respectively. iPod touch sales could boost iOS numbers further, but Walkley isn't including the player in his figures.

Breaking down the iPhone estimate, Walkley suggests that the iPhone 5s likely outsold the 5c by a ratio of 2 to 1. That would put Apple's average selling price (ASP) for phones around $620. ASP is potentially useful for gauging revenues and profit margins.

For the March quarter, Walkley is calling for 42.1 million in iPhone sales, though he says that could be conservative if the forthcoming China Mobile launch proves a major success. For the whole of CY2014, the analyst is forecasting 180.4 million units.
