Google adds Moto G to Google Play lineup

Google on Tuesday revealed a new version of its budget-oriented Moto G handset, a version that sports a plain vanilla version of Android 4.4 KitKat. The Moto G Google Play edition showed up on Google's Play Store on Tuesday in two configurations: one an 8GB model and the other a 16GB model. The low-cost Motorola handset is the latest addition to the Google Play edition lineup, a lineup that does not yet include the Moto G's higher-end sibling, the Moto X.

Starting at $179 off-contract, the Moto G has one of the more attractive price-to-specs ratios available among current Android phones. It packs a 4.5-inch HD display and a quad-core processor, but it is priced more in line with much lower-specced devices.

As with other units in the lineup, the Google Play edition version of the Moto G will ship with an unaltered version of Android installed. Motorola, which is owned by Google, has lessened the amount of "skin" it puts atop the mobile platform for its devices, but even those additions will be gone with the Google Play edition.

The 8GB version of the Google Play edition Moto G will cost $179, the same that the Motorola version costs. The 16GB version will sell for $199. The devices will be compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile's networks, as well as on carriers that resell access on those networks. They are available for purchase through Google's Play Store.
