Facebook sued over alleged false 'like' endorsements in advertising

Facebook user claims not to have endorsed company, seeks $750

Facebook is being sued over apparent false "likes" being used in advertising on the social network. Anthony Ditirro has filed a class-action suit against Facebook in San Jose, for allegedly showing that users are endorsing products on the service to friends and acquaintances linked to the user, even if the claimed endorser did not actually "like" the associated Facebook page.



The complaint spotted by GigaOM notes that a friend of Ditirro commented to him about his apparent endorsement of USA Today. Though Ditirro is noted in the lawsuit that he has "nothing negative to say" about the paper, he is neither an "avid reader" nor openly endorses it. The complaint leverages itself on a Californian law allowing people to demand $750 or more in damages for using their image without permission, with it also said to be a violation of a number of federal laws relating to privacy and the right to publicity.

A spokesperson for Facebook advised "The complaint is without merit and we will defend ourselves vigorously."
