Android 4.1 over 35 percent, Gingerbread continues tumble

Google has released the latest figures illustrating the install base for its Android operating system, showing that version 4.1 Jelly Bean now accounts for nearly 60 percent of devices accessing the Google Play Store over the time period measured. That figure is up seven percent from Google's November figures, demonstrating the rapid adoption of higher-powered Android devices, or at least a lowered incidence of lower-powered devices accessing Google's app repository. The latest figures also show version 4.4 KitKat at 1.4 percent of the Android base, up slightly from the month previous.

The most popular version accessing the Play Store is Android 4.1, the initial build of Jelly Bean, unveiled in June of 2012. Builds of 4.1 hold 35.9 percent of the Android base, followed by version 2.3 Gingerbread, which holds 21.2 percent share.

Version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich accounts for more than one out of six Android devices accessing the Play Store, while versions 4.2 and 4.3 - also under the Jelly Bean moniker - account for 15.4 and 7.8 percent of the base, respectively.

Some time ago, Google tweaked its install base metrics so that they show devices that access the Play Store within a specific time frame, as opposed to its previous metrics, which came closer to measuring the total install base. According to Google, this method provides information more pertinent to developers, as it tells the consumers they are most likely to need to develop for.
