ZTE Eco-Mobius shows potential modular smartphone

updated 06:31 am EST, Thu January 9, 2014

Major components in individual modules combine into smartphone

ZTE demonstrated its own concept for a modular smartphone at CES, one which lets users easily upgrade specific parts of the device. In a similar way to Motorola's Project Ara, the Eco-Mobius has a number of modular sections relating to various functions, allowing for a level of internal customization based on what the user prioritizes in importance and is able to afford.

The Eco-Mobius splits the modules down into four broad categories, covering core components, the display, the battery, and the camera, reports Slashgear. While the display, battery, and camera are self-contained units that cannot be customized further, the core module can be divided further to cover the processor, GPU, RAM, and internal storage.

While ZTE hopes the Eco-Mobius will help in reducing environmental waste in the future, by allowing for incremental upgrades rather than replacing the entire smartphone, it is still just a concept for what the company could produce in the future. While it is unlikely for the company to produce the device anytime soon, the progress made by Motorola on its own version could possibly drive ZTE to develop the Eco-Mobius further.
