iRing controller brings motion control to music apps

Third-party developers get access to free SDK

IK Multimedia has announced the iRing, a new motion controller for iOS devices. The controller itself is simple, merely a plastic ring with three dots on either side; one side uses a line pattern, while the other orients them in a triangle. The core technology is actually in compatible apps, which use an iOS device's front-facing camera to track the dots and interpret gestures as commands.

For $25 buyers get two iRings, which can be used with two free apps, iRing Music Maker and iRing FX/Controller. The former is just for entertainment, letting people experiment with beats, rhythm, synths, and effects. FX/Controller is aimed at more serious musicians and DJs, interpreting gestures as custom-configurable MIDI inputs. That data can then be used by any Core MIDI app on a device, or shared with a computer via Wi-Fi. The app serves as an effects processor with 16 options like Delay, Stutter, Phazer, Flanger, Compression, Fuzzy, Reverb, AutoWah, Crush, Twist Up & Down, Brake, Spin and Tail; Audiobus or Inter-App Audio is used to share output with external apps.

IK says it is planning to integrate iRing into some of its other apps, including AmpliTube, SampleTank, and DJ Rig. The company is hoping to encourage third parties to offer support via a free SDK and licensing program. The product will ship in white, green, and silver colors later this quarter.
