Tips for most major manufacturers coming, company seeks Apple's approval
Power electronics innovator Finsix Corporation is demoing what it calls "the world's smallest laptop adapter" at this week's Consumer Electronics Show. The 65W Finsix Adapter is 25 percent the size and one sixth the weight of competitive adapters including those by Dell, HP, and Apple.Additionally, the adapter has an auxiliary 2.1A USB port, eliminating the need to carry chargers for other devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Finsix's highly miniaturized laptop adapters are made possible by Very High Frequency (VHF) power conversion technology. This new MIT-sponsored technology has switching frequencies between 30MHz and 300MHz, a thousand times faster than traditional power conversion. Finsix's VHF technology is covered by 20 issued and pending patents.
Finsix will begin production of its innovative 65W adapter in mid-2014. The company claims to be seeking Apple's approval to make MagSafe connectors for its adapter. Pricing is not yet available.
