Cromax dual-boot convertible makes CES appearance

updated 05:28 pm EST, Tue January 7, 2014

Cromax tests US waters with Android/Win

India-based Micromax, known only for its A116 Canvas HD smartphone from last year, is now getting into the convertible tablet game with the Canvas Laptab. It functions with both Windows 8.0 and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS choices, and is powered by a 1.46GHz Intel Celeron CPU.

Otherwise, specs include a 10.1-inch IPS touchscreen with a 1280x800-pixel resolution. The tablet will come in 32GB and 64GB capacities, further expandable thanks to a microSD memory card slot. There is also 2GB of RAM onboard and a front-facing two-megapixel camera paired with a light sensor. The package draws power from a 7,400mAh battery, and is said to weigh 650 grams (1.43 pounds).

The tablet is attached to the Bluetooth keyboard via a somewhat flimsy case, and removing it and popping it back in proved to be a bit of a pain. There is a USB 3.0 port, microUSB, and headphone jacks on the left side, along with a mini HDMI output on the right. Inside are Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 radios.

It's due to arrive in the Indian market this March, with Russia following later that month. A US release date hasn't been confirmed yet, as the company seems to be taking a wait-and-see approach. If or when it does, however, we're told it will cost under $500.
