Sony aims for PlayStation Now game streaming launch by summer

Cloud-based DVR service teased alongside Gaikai service rebrand

Sony has revealed that it is naming its online game streaming service PlayStation Now at its CES keynote address, as well as teasing the launch of another cloud-based video service. The Gaikai-powered gaming service will be accompanied by one that will offer live TV, video on demand, and a cloud-based DVR, as Sony attempts to bolster the content available for the PlayStation 4 and its other devices.

The PlayStation Now service was originally hinted at during the PlayStation 4's launch last year, with the intention of streaming PlayStation 3 games and still-downloading PlayStation 4 titles to the console. The new announcement expands the devices set to use it to include the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, smart televisions, tablets, and smartphones, though for those last three it is likely to only do so to Sony-branded hardware. That the service will open in closed beta in the United States at the end of this month, with the intention of a wider release in the summer.

The TV service will apparently provide a variety of live and video on demand content to users, and just as for PlayStation Now, it will exist on a similar variety of Sony devices. The service will allow users to pause television on one screen for later continuation on another, with testing believed to start later this year, though an expected launch period has yet to be decided.

Sony also revealed that it sold a total of 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles as of December 28th. This is twice as many reported by the electronics giant on December 3rd, showing the importance of holiday shopping to console manufacturers.
