Second-gen phone supports all networks

Huawei has introduced its second-generation Ascend Mate2, bringing a long list of upgrades as the company continues to promote its brand in the US and elsewhere. The gigantic 6.1-inch smartphone is claimed to reach two full days of heave use, and even integrates an extra USB port so other devices can be charged from its 4,050mAh battery. We checked out the new device at the company's CES press conference today in Las Vegas.

The Mate2 integrates the same display size and overall design as its predecessor, though it features an upgraded processor and expanded support for LTE networks. The company claims the device is compatible with all mobile network technologies, preparing it for availability in a wide range of global markets.

Despite the new reverse-charging port, the ingegrated battery offers the same capacity as the original Ascend Mate. The company claims that the battery life is actually improved, however, due to software tweaks and hardware optimizations. It is difficult to judge the claims without spending a few days with the phone to see if it lives up to its multiple-day promises.

The Mate2 clearly takes inspiration from Samsung's Galaxy Note series. We found Huawei's alternative to be a formidable competitor, but lacking enough differentiating features to make a significant dent in Samsung's hold on the high-end Android market.
