Apple, Samsung grow US smartphone share in Sept.-Nov. period

updated 05:09 am EST, Mon January 6, 2014

Motorola, LG, HTC suffer setbacks

Apple and Samsung increased their shares of the US smartphone market based on unverified shipment data in the September-November period versus June-August, new ComScore data shows. Apple advanced 0.5 points to 41.2 percent, maintaining overall control; Samsung, though, gained 1.7 points to hit 26 percent, narrowing the gap. In distant third was Motorola, down 0.2 points to 6.7 percent. LG dropped the same amount to 6.5 percent, but swapped places with HTC, which dipped a full point to 6.4 percent.

US smartphone ownership went up 3 points to 63.8 percent, or 152.5 million people. Despite Apple's position as the dominant individual phone maker, Android remained the most successful platform, inching ahead 0.3 points to 51.9 percent of smartphones. BlackBerry fell 0.5 points to 3.5 percent, but still did better than Microsoft's Windows Phone, which slid a tenth of a point to 3.1 percent. The now-obsolete Symbian platform, slipped by the same amount but to a much lower 0.2 percent.

Apple's slow but steady growth pattern, which has been going on for months, has undoubtedly been helped by the release of the iPhone 5s and 5c, which took place in September. It is possible Apple might begin to lose ground in the next several months, since it only releases new phones once a year -- at least so far. Samsung, in contrast, tends to launch new phones several times per year.
