Briefly: PopCap losing two co-founders, Zynga accepting BitCoin

updated 04:44 pm EST, Sat January 4, 2014

PopCap CEO, lead designer departing; remaining co-founder new GM

Game developer PopCap, known for titles such as Peggle and the Plants Versus Zombies series, is seeing two of its co-founders depart the company. CEO Dave Roberts and chief designer Jason Kapalka are leaving the studio they helped found, effective the week of January 6. PopCap's sole remaining co-founder, John Vechey, is slated to become the new general manager of the development house.

Vechey is planning on having the company step back from its role as a publisher and regroup as a developer, saying "we need to get back to the place where we used to be and not just in mobile." He added that "we have underinvested in new IP. Getting more new IP out per year is the goal. We want to formalize the creative process and get it to scale better." Parent company Electronic Arts will serve as the company's publisher in the future.

Zynga accepting BitCoin in some titles for in-app purchases

Embattled game creator Zynga has launched an experiment to accept alternative currency Bitcoin for in-game purchases on some of its titles. The experiment, in conjunction with currency exchange Bitpay, allows users to purchase items in FarmVille 2, CastleVille, ChefVille, CoasterVille, Hidden Chronicles, Hidden Shadows, and CityVille. It is unknown what percentage of users are both players of the casual titles PopCap offers, and are BitCoin holders or miners.

Translation: "EA is killing us with badly-thought-out idiot sequels like Plants vs. Zombies 2, like they've killed so many of their other acquisitions, and so we're taking the money and getting out before the company implodes. Maybe we'll found another company and make GOOD games again."
