Samsung teases new wearable device for 2014, possible CES unveil

updated 02:37 pm EST, Sat January 4, 2014

Galaxy Band, other wearable be in the offing

Samsung may be preparing to reveal yet another wearable computing device in the near future, as Samsung UK hinted this week that such a device was in the offing. A post on the Samsung UK Twitter feed teased the unveiling of a new Samsung device, and the presence of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch in that post has observers speculating that Samsung's next big unveil may be another entry in its nascent line of wearable tech. Some speculate that Samsung could show off a new wrist-mounted device as soon as next week's Consumer Electronics Show.

This week, Samsung began touting its forthcoming presence at CES, hyping its future unveilings, but not revealing too much in the way of specifics. A post on the company's blog hinted at "innovative products" that could be shown off at CES. That mention came in the course of a paragraph that discussed wearable devices, specifically the Galaxy Gear, and so the company may be nodding to future wearables to come.

Despite the considerable fanfare with which Samsung launched it, the Galaxy Gear smartwatch debuted to a lukewarm critical response, and some reports have the device suffering from a high customer return rate. Undeterred, Samsung is said to be working on additional devices, including a fitness tracker believed to be called the Galaxy Band.

That device is said to either have been developed or to be in development under the guidance of former Apple software engineer Luc Julia. The Apple engineer - responsible in part for the development of Siri - now works on Samsung's Architecture for Multimodal Interactions, a framework on which a number of devices can interact, including smartwatches, tablets, smartphones, and more. The Galaxy Band is said to incorporate multiple low-power motion sensors, pressure sensors, and ways of measuring humidity, temperature, and more.
