Scanner Pro becomes first free App of the Week for 2014
The first "App of the Week" on iTunes for 2014 is Readdle's Scanner Pro, a normally $7 program that turns an iPhone or iPad camera into a scanner. The program combines plane mechanics and border detection to straighten documents, then saves them as PDF files on a variety of cloud services, including iCloud, Dropbox and Google Drive. With the purchase of in-app credits, users can also send the PDF scan as an outgoing fax which is delivered to conventional fax machines.
Starbucks now supports iSight camera for redeeming Pick of the Week promos
Coffee chain Starbucks, which offers a free "Pick of the Week" iTunes song or iOS app in its North American stores, now lets users leverage their built-in iPhone or iPad cameras to redeem the code that allows the free download (in the same way users can do this with iTunes gift cards). Available on all devices that run iOS 7, the card is simply held in front of the front-facing camera when the user is on the "redeem" page of the iTunes app (or the Starbucks app) and the code is "read," crediting the item to the user where they previously had to type in a long code. This week's free app is EA's Scrabble game in Canada and an Adele song in the US, but users must pick up a card from their local Starbucks or get the code from Starbucks' main website.
