Wall Street Journal: Google, Audi partnering on in-car Android system

updated 11:58 am EST, Mon December 30, 2013

Will announce partnership at CES, working with Nvidia on hardware

Google is working with Audi to use Android with in-car systems for information and entertainment, according to a report. The two companies will allegedly announce their partnership at CES next week, with the efforts said to involve Android running on the car's own hardware, instead of communicating with an external device, such as with "iOS in the Car."

Sources of the Wall Street Journal claim that the hardware will run Android apps typically associated with navigation, communication, and entertaining, such as Google Maps and Google Play Music. They will also announce collaborations with other Android hardware producers, such as Nvidia, for the construction of the system. Nvidia has previously worked with Audi to demonstrate how a smartphone or tablet could be used to access the media and navigation controls of a vehicle.

The deal with Audi by Google could be considered a retaliation move to Apple and the "iOS in the Car" system, which allows drivers to access audio, video, and interact with a connected iOS device through a screen in the vehicle's dashboard. While Google has apparently signed up to work with just Audi, Apple is working with Honda, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Chevrolet, Lexus, Kia, Volvo, and Jaguar. Honda is already said to be offering a dedicated Siri button on some models sold in Japan, putting Apple ahead of Google in the battle for the driver's attention.
