Nokia's Lumia 1520 sells out of initial Indian run

Nokia's Lumia 1520 handset appears to have seen initial success following its launch in India. The six-inch, Windows Phone 8-powered phablet has sold through all color options in that country, WinBeta notes, just days after its debut. The quick sell-through is surprising, given the Indian market's typical preference for lower cost handsets.

Whether the sell-through is driven by high demand, low supply, or a mixture of the two is uncertain, but Nokia's pages for the handset show that the red, black, white, and yellow color options are all exhausted. The Finnish phone maker offered the devices at launch with a 17 percent discount off the initial price of INR56,539, instead selling it for INR46,999 (around $760). That is still well above the prices of the best selling devices in the country, low-end handsets from Samsung.




The six-inch device is also out of stock on FlipKart, an Indian online retailer offering the 1520 for INR1,000 less than Nokia.

The Lumia 1520 has now launched in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, as well as India. It will likely be among the last of Nokia's Windows Phone-powered handsets. Microsoft has purchased Nokia's hardware manufacturing business for $7.2 billion, and future Lumia devices will be made under Microsoft's brand.
