Best Buy drops iPhone 5c to free on contract

updated 05:16 pm EST, Sun December 29, 2013

Best Buy offering iPhone 16GB iPhone 5c for free

Best Buy is now offering shoppers the chance to pick up Apple's iPhone 5c for free with the activation of a new contract. The retailer has 16GB iPhone 5c models available for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, each priced at $0, so long as a customer signs up for a new contract. The 32GB versions of the mid-range iPhone sell for $80 on contract, and Best Buy is also offering the iPhone 5s at a low cost.

The iPhone 5s is available at $125 for a 16GB model, $225 for a 32GB model, and $325 for a 64GB model, each requiring the activation of a new two-year contract.

Best Buy has not specified whether this is a limited time year-end sale or if the prices will endure through the end of 2013. The retailer has in the past held short-term sales on Apple's assorted iPhone models, but nothing on the current page indicates that this deal will expire in the near future.

I guess that means that no one wants to buy a 5c and that they're dropping the price just to move them out of inventory. I wonder if this indicates that Apple will soon be discontinuing the 5c relatively soon. I may be reading too much into this price drop because many retailers have had soft sales of everything and may merely want to get consumers into their stores to buy something. Hopefully this sale will get consumers looking to get an iPhone for a low price to purchase it and at lease get them hooked on the iOS ecosystem.

This no more indicates that the iPhone 5c will be dropped than that the Galaxy S4 or Nexus 5 will be dropped -- as both routinely go on sale as well. By all indications, the iPhone 5c is selling at the same or better level than the iPhone 4S did after the iPhone 5 displaced it as the flagship model. The iPhone 5c has been the second or third best-seling phone at AT&T and Verizon since it came out. I'd hardly call that "nobody wants to buy one."

I miss the days when Apple products were priced consistently across vendors. Apple's being headed the direction of Dell by Best Buy and other retailers by making sales and discounts different every day.

It's a double-edged sword. Apple is popular enough now that many, many dealers are competing for customers, cutting prices in exchange for volume.

This isn't a sign that iPhone 5cs aren't selling; on the contrary: this is retailers using Apple products to get a bigger slice of the pie.

Back when the Mac was the underdog and the iPod didn't exist, that math didn't work.

It was a simpler time. :)
