Apple begins '12 Days of Gifts' with Justin Timberlake single

updated 09:28 am EST, Thu December 26, 2013

App-based promo runs through January 6th

Apple has officially begun its 12 Days of Gifts promotion, made possible through an iOS app available in select markets. The first day's download is a collection of four Justin Timberlake tracks from his concert at the 2013 iTunes Festival, including "SexyBack," "Take Back the Night," "True Blood," and "TKO." A new offering will be available each day through January 6th; access to a download expires once the next one appears.

This year marks the first time that Apple has run a 12 Days promotion in the US. The company has used previous ones to give away not only music but also things like apps, books, and movies. It teased the formal start of the 2013 promo by giving away Lorde's "No Better" on December 16th.

I knew there was a good reason I didn't sign up for this. At least my iTunes library isn't corrupted by having any Justin Timberlake in there. The thought of coming across these tracks unexpectedly is enough to dampen the holiday cheer...

yeah I hate when that happens, when Apple forces you to download songs of, or even look at pictures of, music performers you don't like! THANKS OBAMA

I'm no fan of Justin Timberlake either, daqman, but let's not pretend that the songs are downloaded to your machine without your consent and participation, mmmkay? It's an offer of a freebie; you still have to accept it and download it before it appears in your iTunes library. Today's offering not for you? That's fine; maybe tomorrow's will be.

No, they don't force you to take it, but they promise "gifts" without saying that the "gifts" are simply juvenile rock records. 0 for 2 so far, Apple. A third one like that tonight and I'll just trash the app.
