New Mac Pro debuts to strong demand, shipping slips

The debut of Apple's new Mac Pro desktop may have met with considerable demand, as shipping times for the powerful new Mac have slipped to months from now. Apple appears to have sold through its initial allocation of Mac Pro units, as a look at the online Apple Store shows the devices shipping in February of 2014. It is unclear whether the delay in shipping, which occurred just hours after the devices launched, is due to pent-up demand or lack of supply.

The new Mac is the first Apple product in some time to be assembled in the US entirely. Apple has the powerful desktop machines built in a facility in Austin, Texas. The devices were shown off earlier this year during the 2013 Worldwide Developer Conference, but they did not launch until today, some six months after their unveiling, possibly indicating difficulties in producing units.

Alternatively, the Mac Pro line has not been updated in years, which may indicate that the professional community that relies on these devices has a high level of demand for a refreshed workstation. Last year, an online petition for a new Mac Pro grabbed more than 4,100 Likes on Facebook, indicating the degree of support that was still out there for a refresh.

Potential Mac Pro buyers that haven't ordered a model yet are not entirely out of luck. The computers are also available through third-party retailers such as MacMall and B&H Photo.
