Smartwatch gets new way to download apps

Pebble on Wednesday announced that, alongside a new Pebble SDK, the upstart smartwatch will be getting its own app repository. The announcement came by way of the Pebble Developer Blog, with Pebble calling the coming appstore "the first place where Pebble users [will] look for Pebble apps." The new SDK and the appstore are set for launch some time in early 2014.

Pebble's appstore will have six categories for apps: Daily, Remotes, Sports & Fitness, Notifications, Tools & Utilities, and Games. The company will allow developers to link to required iOS and Android apps from the Pebble appstore as well, thus streamlining the process of getting companion smartwatch apps connected to iOS and Android content. Developers that have built an iOS or Android app that connects through the Pebble Sports API can link from an entry in the Pebble appstore directly to the app's page in the Google Play or iOS App stores.

Submission to the appstore will be free and open to all developers, provided they adhere to Pebble's guidelines and join the developer portal. Pebble 1.x apps will not run on the 2.0 firmware, and Pebble is automatically upgrading existing Pebble apps when it pushes out the new firmware.
