Facebook beginning autoplay video advertising in News Feed this week

Video ads on Facebook will automatically play silently

Facebook will be rolling out video advertisements to the News Feed of its users this week. A statement from the social network about the new ads effectively confirms an earlier report from the Wall Street Journal, with both desktop users and mobile device owners expected to see the new advertising units with automatically-playing video on their screens in the coming days.

Though the video will start running without the user's prompting, it will play silently. A tapped or clicked video will start playing audio, with the option to view it in full screen, though once the video ends, a carousel with two additional videos will appear, offering the viewer the option to explore the advertisement further. Despite the potentially large file sizes associated with video ads, Facebook advises that they will be downloaded in advance on a mobile device over a Wi-Fi connection, rather than consume any data plan allocation.

This is not the first time that Facebook has dealt with video advertising, as Instagram has offered similar video-based marketing for a number of months already. It is thought that Facebook could be generating $1 million to $2.5 million per day, per marketer, from the video ads.

That should just about seal the fate of Facebook usage on my iPhone...using up my bandwidth and battery (regardless of what FB states) will keep me from even occasionally opening Facebook.

The trade off of your privacy, the constant bombardment of ads and now video ads on Facebook all for the convenience of posting pictures of your dog?

How much am I worth to Facebook? Why not give me an option to pay that annually to avoid ads all together? It can't be THAT much money. I think most people realize that it costs money to run FB, and if it's reasonable we'd be happy to pay a few bucks.

I have a biz page on FB, and it's worth up to about $50/yr for me to keep in contact with my customers via updates.

Facebook has enough ads all over the rest of their screen. Placing them in the news feed is pretty obnoxious. I get it. They need to put ads in that will squeak through their mobile versions. Which is why I never use it outside a full browser. Which should be easy enough to detect and stop. But I'm not in charge of maxing out their ad revenues, so what do I know?

Surprise, folks! A company that can host more than a billion people's vain musings about what they had for dinner is expensive! I know, shocking. Azrich: you would most definitely not be willing to pay what FB can get out of you in ad revenue, I assure you. Hint: way more than $50/year, particularly for businesses.
