Twitter study shows iPad, iPhone most desired tech gifts

Munster sees an iPad, iPhone Christmas

Apple's iPad and iPhone are among the most desired items being mentioned on Twitter for this holiday season, according to one analysis. In a new report released on Tuesday, analyst Gene Munster pointed to a Piper Jaffray study of more than 25,000 tweets, claiming that the iPhone and iPad were among the items most mentioned in connection with a desired gift. The findings appear to jibe with Apple CEO Tim Cook's earlier prediction that this holiday season would be "an iPad Christmas."

Piper Jaffray scanned more than 25,000 tweets with a reference to @Santa or the #WishList hashtag. Based on Twitter profile descriptions, 29.9 percent of the tweeter pool was between 14 and 17 years old, 34.5 percent between 18 and 21, 21.8 between 22 and 25, 9.2 percent between 26 and 29, and just 4.5 percent over the age of 30.

The iPhone was the most popular desired tech gift, according to Piper Jaffray's analysis, as it was present in 0.49 percent of the studied tweets. Following the iPhone was Sony's PlayStation 4, with 0.34 percent of studied tweets. The terms iPad, Xbox, and MacBook rounded out the top five, with 0.33, 0.22, and 0.15 percent of studied tweets mentioning them.

As it only studies mentions on Twitter during a specific time frame, Piper Jaffray's analysis cannot, of course, be taken as a completely representative sample. Munster's report notes that the study does not measure consumer intent, only what some potential consumers would buy or would like to receive.

Still, the popularity of Apple products among other gadgets is evident at least among those that will take to the microblogging service to express their desires. The holiday quarter is typically Apple's strongest, as it usually follows the launch of a new iPhone and iPad. Apple usually does not miss a step in taking advantage of this, releasing holiday ads to tout its iOS devices as the best gift options for the season.

Other popular terms appearing in the Twitter study were "Galaxy," "iPod," "tablet," "Samsung," and "Android."
