Distimo: App Store leads revenue, Google Play growing faster

updated 04:17 pm EST, Tue December 17, 2013

Google platform dominates in Korea, Japan

Apple's App Store has reportedly held its leading position this year in terms of revenue, though Google Play has maintained a stronger growth rate, according to data published by app analytics firm Distimo. Between January and November, Apple's revenue share had fallen from 70 to 63 percent while Google's share jumped from 30 to 37 percent.

The faster pace of app-revenue growth from Android devices has been partially explained by the dominance of Google's mobile platform in two of the hottest markets: Japan and South Korea. The data echoes a separate report by App Annie that highlighted Japan as the first country to outspend the US in mobile app sales.

"For Google Play it was interesting to note that after the most dominating countries - Japan, South Korea, and the United States - Germany had the fourth biggest revenue portion in 2013," Distimo wrote in its latest report.

The analysts also point out a trend toward "freemium" apps that can be downloaded for free but bring revenue from in-app purchases. Such titles are said to represent 92 percent of App Store revenue and 98 percent of Google Play revenue, leaving a small fraction of revenue from traditional pay-to-download apps.

Putting the numbers into a different perspective, estimated global revenue for the top 200 App Store titles has reached $18 million per day. Estimated revenue from the top 200 Google Play apps is slightly behind at $12 million per day, a nearly four-fold jump from the $3.5 million in estimated daily revenue during November 2012.
