Nokia steps in to provide Galaxy S4 owner with new phone

Nokia has offered a free Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia device to a man whose Samsung Galaxy S4 caught fire earlier this month. Richard Wygand's GS4 smoked and burned while it was charging, and Samsung's reaction to his posting images of the device on the Internet sparked a controversy last week, as the South Korean tech giant appeared to try to buy Wygand's silence with the promise of a new phone. Nokia contacted Wygan and offered him a Lumia by Twitter.

Nokia has in the past made news by reaching out personally to consumers apparently wronged by other tech giants. In October, the company sent a Lumia 1020 to a filmmaker who claimed Apple had used his video without permission.

In subsequent Twitter exchanges between Nokia and Wygand, Wygand appears open to the possibility of switching from Samsung's Android-powered phone to Nokia's Windows Phone 8 device. Nokia, in the course of the exchanges, ascertained Wygand's wireless carrier, and a device is likely on the way.

The development has been something of an embarrassment for Samsung, as Wygand's video spread across the Internet. Commenters on the numerous postings of the video have noted that Samsung's request that Wygand take the video down smacks of limitations on his freedom of speech.
