Microsoft sees big increase in activations, but percentage still tiny
A new study by Microsoft Exchange services firm Intermedia has shown that Apple devices being activated on its Microsoft Exchange-based network accounted for 76 percent of all small- and medium-business (SMB) activations across 2013 -- some 190,000 iPhones and iPads in total. This was more than six times the 29,000 activations seen with Samsung Android devices, providing some insight into a continuing trend in business that favors Apple products.
Though the study was good news for Apple, there was also a glimmer of hope for Microsoft, which saw its Windows Phone devices increase activations by nearly double, though this was still too small to amount to much. Samsung took second place with 12 percent, followed by Motorola with five percent. The combined total for all Android-based providers was 22 percent, with Windows and BlackBerry splitting the remaining two percent.
Also noted in the study was that SMBs -- not unlike the consumer market -- prefer the more advanced iPhone 5s to the iPhone 5c (both of which only launched in the final month of the survey, October). The 64-bit flagship model had roughly four times the number of activations (6,906) as the more colorful 5c (1,521). Older but more business-looking iPhone models like the 4, 4S and 5 all had more activations than the youth-targeted 5c -- unsurprising given the demographic surveyed.
Data for the survey comes anonymously from Intermedia's SMB customers, drawn from its overall base of 700,000 businesses of all sizes. Over the past three years, device activations have mushroomed -- there were fewer than 90,000 in 2011, but as of October the 2013 total was just under 250,000 activations.
