updated 04:10 pm EST, Thu December 12, 2013

Executive formerly ran USPTO satellite office in Silicon Valley

A former senior attorney once on Google's payroll has been named to run the United States Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) until a new permanent director is selected. Michelle Lee was the former deputy general counsel and head of patent strategy at Google before her departure to head the Silicon Valley office of the USPTO.

The executive said of Google and the USPTO that "none of the policy positions of my former employers has guided my work. I certainly would be very welcoming of everybody's input." Lee will likely continue the legacy of the previous interim chief in utilizing technology to streamline the lengthy and arduous process of patent application and approval.

Lee received her bachelor and master of science degrees in computer science and electrical engineering, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and her law degree from Stanford Law School. Prior to law school, she worked as a computer science researcher at HP and the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Upon graduating from Stanford, she was a clerk for Judge Vaughn Walker on the US District Court for the Northern District of California.
