Super-sized stylus phone sees quick sales

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 is off to an even faster sales pace than its predecessors, ships 10 million units in just two months since its release. A post from Samsung placed the Note 3 in a line with 13 other 10 million unit-shipping devices reaching back to 2002. The announcement also marks the Note 3 as the seventh consecutive Samsung flagship device to ship 10 million units or more, a trend that began with the original Galaxy S.

Along with the Galaxy S series, the Galaxy Note series serves as a line of flagship models for Samsung, with high-end internal components and multi-million dollar marketing pushes for both lines. With 10 million units shipped in 60 days, the Note 3 has again demonstrated the power of the niche segment that Samsung essentially created with the original Galaxy Note. The first in the line went on to 10 million in shipped units, but did so over the course about a year.

The new Note has hit the 10 million mark roughly twice as fast as the Note II. In September, Samsung said that it expected the Note 3 to sell in excess of 10 million devices, a conservative estimate for the South Korean tech giant, considering that the Note 2 went on to roughly 20 million in shipments. By the time Samsung made that announcement in late September, the Note and Note II had shipped more than 38 million units in total.

Further demonstrating the market for its form factor, the Note 3 hit the 10 million mark in a window comparable to Samsung's much smaller and much more widely-marketed Galaxy S4. The S4 hit the 10 million point in just 50 days. Samsung has not released any figures on actual sales to end-users, inferring that shipments have equalled sales. Like most other manufacturers, it does not provide sell-through figures, but at least in some cases its sales do not match its shipment claims.
