NimbleTV opens streaming cable TV service in New York City

updated 01:49 pm EST, Tue December 10, 2013

Aereo-style service from NimbeTV requires cable service authentication

A startup offering cable TV streaming over the Internet has opened its service to everyone in New York, following a successful test period in the city. In a similar manner to Aereo's service, NimbleTV will offer cable subscribers access to the same channels but over the Internet, along with the ability to record programs via the cloud-based DVR.

Existing cable subscribers that authenticate an existing subscription with the service will pay a monthly fee starting from $3.99 for 24 channels, reports The Verge, with higher-priced subscriptions such as the $4.99 and $6.99 plans upgrading the original DVR allocation from 20 hours to 40 and 60 hours respectively. Those without a cable subscription have the option of using the NimbleTV concierge to sign up for an appropriate cable service, along with more channels, though this inflates the cost to at least $30 per month.

While the platform sounds similar to that of Aereo and its broadcast TV online DVR service, NimbleTV hopes to avoid the same legal issues Aereo had to navigate. The fact that users have to either pay for a cable subscription via the service or prove they already have a subscription means that broadcasters cannot as readily complain about the service, and the cable service authentication aspect is a hopeful sign that it is accepted by the cable companies themselves.

The current service is able to run through the browser, Roku, and on iOS devices, with Apple TV over Airplay. An Android version is also said to be on the way.
