Claims first 1TB mSATA SSD storage in industry

Samsung has launched a new collection of mSATA solid state drives that includes a number of high-capacity offerings, despite their small size. Continuing the naming convention of its full-sized stablemates, the 840 EVO range introduces a 1-terabyte drive, something which Samsung claims to be the "industry's first 1TB mSATA SSD," along with 500GB, 250GB, and 120GB versions.

The supersized mSATA drives, the top two of which exceed the capacity of the 480GB Mushkin drives launched at this time last year, all use Samsung's 10nm 128-gigabit NAND flash memory, with 64 layers of the chips packed into four memory packages of 16 layers each to create the 1TB drive. Weighing 8.5 grams, the 840EVO measures 3.85mm thick, with the highest capacity version offering 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS (Input Output Operations per Second), and sequential reading and writing speeds of 540MB/s and 520MB/s.

The release date and pricing for the 840 EVO range has yet to be revealed, except that it will launch globally this month, and the availability will vary between regions. Considering its size, the 1TB mSATA SSD will probably cost more than the Mushkin Atlast 480GB's $500 launch price.
