Carrier promotes global data packages

AT&T has announced that its customers can take advantage of LTE roaming while traveling in Canada. The service is one of the first to enable LTE connectivity for US travelers as they head across northern borders, through a roaming agreement with Canadian carrier Rogers Communications.

AT&T currently offers data roaming at a pay-per-use rate of $15.36 per megabyte, though the company also offers global data packages. Customers can can choose from 120MB for $30/month, 300MB for $60/month or 800MB for $120/month, with overage rates set at $30 per 120MB.

Despite the LTE agreement, US and Canadian carriers have yet to voice interest in any significant changes to their roaming price schemes. Rogers boasts typical LTE speeds of between 12 Mbps and 40 Mbps, which would add between $23 to $122 to an AT&T customer's bill for just a single second of use without a global data package.

Reports circulating earlier this year suggest the European Commission may be moving to put an end to mobile roaming charges, which would be eliminated through proposed consumer-protection laws. UK carrier Three is one of several carriers making voluntary progress in the same direction, enabling its subscribers to use their domestic call, text and data allowances when traveling in a number of countries.

Rogers and AT&T. Two companies who put nothing before their customers. Or nothing between themselves and their customers wallets.

Seriously, $15/Mb is an insane ripoff.
