Samsung said to prep 8-inch, 10-inch AMOLED tablets for 2014

Samsung reportedly working on AMOLED screens for tablets

South Korean tech giant will reportedly release two new tablets next year that will rely on the AMOLED display technology currently featured in its Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 flagship devices. This according to a new report from Korea's Naver saying that the tech conglomerate is looking to leverage its AMOLED technology to better combat Apple in the tablet segment. Reportedly, the new high-end display tech will show up in both an 8-inch and a 10-inch tablet.

The AMOLED tech would likely show up only in the high-end versions of Samsung's tablets, and the company would likely continue releasing lower-end versions relying on the LCD technology featured in current Samsung devices. It is, as yet, unclear whether those "high-end" devices would be in the Galaxy Note series - which features an S Pen digitizer stylus - or the more iPad-like Galaxy Tab series.

Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) technology consists of a thin layer of organic polymers that light up when hit with electric current. They are thinner than LCD displays, and they do not require a backlight. This allows for the display to show black coloration simply by shutting off pixels. They also offer a wider contrast ratio than LCD displays, allowing for darker darks and brighter brights.

Samsung has been gaining on Apple in the tablets market, increasing its share to about 22 percent of shipped devices in the last quarter. That is still well behind Apple's roughly 30 percent share, but Samsung grew its position by 8.1 percentage points year-over-year. Samsung makes the Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab series, and a range of other devices, whereas Apple's tablet line includes the full-size and "mini" versions of its iPad line.
