ABBYY ships FineReader Pro OCR software for Mac

updated 02:25 pm EST, Thu December 5, 2013

Scans, converts documents into numerous formats

ABBYY has released FineReader Pro, an OCR tool for the Mac. The software pulls images from cameras and dedicated scanners and converts the content into text files. During the import process, FineReader can apply pre-processing options to fix distortions; an Image Editor lets users manually correct elements like contrast, noise, motion blur, and split pages.

Over 180 languages are supported, and output formats include DOCX, EPUB, FB2, HTML, ODT, RTF, and XLSX, as well as PDF and PDF/A. Users can scan all or just a portion of a document, and the software will automatically attempt to mirror aspects like headers, footers, tables, diagrams, and tables of contents. PDF files can include live links between sections.

The software costs $100 new via ABBYY or the Mac App Store. Only the ABBYY store offers an $80 upgrade from FineReader Express or Sprint 8.0.
