Google offers free upgrade to new Glass for existing Explorer users

updated 06:23 am EST, Thu December 5, 2013

Google Glass owners have 60 days to exchange for new device

Google is giving current Google Glass owners the option to upgrade their device for free. The search company is offering the newest version of the head-mounted display to existing Explorer owners if they exchange the one they are currently using, with owners starting to receive e-mails inviting them to swap their units for the newer model.

The invitation lasts until February 5th, writes Engadget, and though Google does point out that it is not a mandatory change, it does advise that it will be "designing for the newer version," so accessories for Glass created in the future may not work with the older version. Despite being a new model, Google is advising that the new device received by developers is "still going to be an Explorer Edition... just an updated one."

The changes Google made to the $1,500 Glass in October are relatively minor, but useful none the less. The new model works with an earbud accessory, allowing for improved audio over its existing bone conduction method. It is also claimed to be a "bit faster and more durable," compatible with new "Shades," and will work with prescription frames in the future.
