Android 4.4.1 to fix Nexus 5 camera bugs, improve autofocus

updated 11:54 am EST, Thu December 5, 2013

Camera app overhauled and optimized

Google has reportedly focused on Nexus 5 camera functionality with the upcoming Android 4.4.1 update, which is expected to begin rolling out this week. The software tweaks promise to resolve problems with the current camera, improving autofocus time and exposure in low-light conditions.

"There's a tendency to say, 'oh, we have this cool thing that stabilizes, so lets make the shutter time longer, reduce the gain even longer, and get better shots,'" Android director of engineering Dave Burke told The Verge.

The company decided to increase the shutter speed in moderate-light settings, taking advantage of optical image stabilization to reduce motion blur. The changes are also said to reduce the camera app's startup time by a full second, while a progress indicator has been added to the HDR+ mode.

Burke also notes that users can expect more vibrant colors and improved white balance, helping to make photos "pop a little more."

Nexus 5 owners will reportedly begin receiving the Android 4.4.1 update over the next few days.
