Google launches cloud-based Compute Engine service, lowers prices

updated 08:48 am EST, Tue December 3, 2013

Virtual-machine service completes beta testing

Google has finally completed invite-only beta trials of its Compute Engine service, bringing lower prices and new features for the wider rollout. As part of the Google Cloud Platform, which competes with Windows Azure and Amazon EC2 offerings, the service provides access to virtual machines that can be scaled to suit a wide range of applications.

Compute Engine is designed to integrate with the other Cloud Platform products, including storage and database services, App Engine web-app hosting, and App Services. Alongside the Compute Engine launch, the company has also announced that it is lowering the price of Persistent Disk storage by 60 percent per gigabyte and dropping the I/O fees.

The service has also been updated with several new capabilities that will be immediately available for new or existing customers, enabling developers to run any out-of-the-box Linux distribution and any kernels or software. The system also adds new transparent-maintenance features that enable problems to be addressed without interrupting the virtual-machine operations.

The new pricing and expanded configurations are immediately available to all developers.
