PS4's Gaikai-powered game streaming reportedly slated for Q3 2014

Europe launch expected in 2015

Sony is reportedly planning to bring online game streaming to its PlayStation 4 platform in the third quarter of 2014, unnamed sources have told Eurogamer. The company previously noted that the Gaikai-powered features won't be available until 2014, however the leak suggests the new console hardware will be on the market for nearly a year before the streaming feature arrives for users in North America.

Sony Computer Entertainment purchased Gaikai earlier this year for $380 million, giving the Japanese company an opportunity to bring the cloud-based technology to its range of products. Initial plans focus on the PlayStation 4, though the capabilities are also promised for the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation Vita handheld and other connected devices.

"We think there's a great opportunity to broaden the market, because you essentially remove the need to make the console purchase in order to have access to that experience," SCE president Andrew House told Eurogamer. "It may sound counter-intuitive, because, aren't you replacing a business that is your bread and butter? But part of being an innovative company is being a pioneer in new forms of distribution of content, and we would like to be there first and take a leadership role."

Sony is said to have already outlined its streaming game plans with developers ahead of a beta-testing period that is expected to begin early next year.
