Apple Stores going RED for World AIDS Day

updated 07:41 pm EST, Sat November 30, 2013

December 1 will see Apple Stores with (RED) logo

Apple will turn its iconic white Apple retail store logos red for a day on Sunday in order to mark World Aids Day. The color change is the latest in a string of signs of support from the iPhone maker for the Product (RED) initiative, which works to combat AIDS worldwide. As 9to5Mac notes, the change over to the red logo has already begun at Apple's Regent Street Store in London, and other locations are expected to follow soon after.

World AIDS Day falls on December 1 in the United Kingdom and the United States. The purpose of the day is to increase awareness of AIDS, and a number of charities hold events on the day, with the proceeds going to the fight against the disease.

Apple, so far, has contributed $65 million to (Product) RED, according to the charity's own Twitter feed. That makes the Cupertino tech giant the single largest contributor to the charity among all participating companies.

In addition to its contributions, Apple sells (Product) RED branded iPod shuffles, iPod nanos, iPod touch units, Smart Covers for the iPad, and an iPhone 4S bumper.

Apple design head Jony Ive has also supported the initiative in the recent past. Ive and co-designer Marc Newson designed a RED-branded line of unique items for auction at Sotheby's. The line, which included items such as a grand piano, an aluminum desk, and a red Mac Pro, fetched millions of dollars for charity when it went on the block.
