Lumia 2520 owners reporting screen freeze issue requiring reset

updated 02:01 pm EST, Thu November 28, 2013

Nokia's new Windows RT tablet still has bugs

Nokia's newly released Lumia 2520 tablet appears to suffer from a screen malfunction that causes it to become inoperable until reset. The issue emerged this week in a Nokia device support forum, with several commenters saying the displays on their just-bought devices will not wake from sleep mode. The issue, when it occurs, does not resolve itself until the device is reset.

The issue appears to affect both AT&T- and Verizon-branded Lumia 2520s, and commenters on Nokia's support forum speculated that it may be tied to display drivers, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi.

"From my observations," wrote one user, "the problem seems to have something to do with the duration of sleep ... and/or leaving the current wireless network whilst in sleep, and/or Bluetooth. Administrative events in the event logs only show the forced shutdown as a critical error. However, the Windows system event log shows Kernel-PnP 219 warnings related to being unable to load driver WUDFRD for ACPI and BTHLED devices."

When the bug is active, Nokia's Lumia 2520 screen goes blank and becomes unresponsive.

The prevalence of the problem with Nokia's new tablet is as uncertain as its cause. Electronista, though, has independently verified the malfunction. The issue has occurred multiple times in just a few days of interaction with our review unit.

When it occurs, the screen will not wake from sleep, and the device does not respond to touch commands. It is, though, still active, as evidenced by the haptic feedback given when one touches the Windows button on the device's face. Only by performing a hard reset - holding both the power and Windows buttons for several seconds, or holding the power button for 10 seconds - can the screen be reactivated.

The Lumia 2520 is Nokia's first tablet for the Windows 8 era, and it runs Microsoft's Windows RT platform for ARM-based processors. The device launched last week in AT&T stores, Microsoft retail locations, and Verizon stores, as well as the online equivalents for those three. Nokia has declined to comment further on if or when the device could be available at other retailers.
