Better iPhone 5s supplies linked to 'around the clock' Foxconn work

updated 09:07 am EST, Wed November 27, 2013

Supplier adds more workers to assembly lines

The recent uptick in iPhone 5s supplies is connected to "around the clock" production at Foxconn, and more people being brought onto assembly lines, says the Wall Street Journal. At the supplier's Zhengzhou facilities, 100 lines are said to be operating at all hours for the 5s, with about 600 people per line. "We have been churning out about 500,000 iPhone 5ss everyday, the highest daily output ever," an anonymous Foxconn executive is quoted as saying.

The executive adds that it takes longer to build a 5s versus a 5c, or even the more similarly-constructed iPhone 5. "For the iPhone 5c or the iPhone 5, we only have 500 workers per production line as the assembly procedure is less complicated," he says. "Although the market had concerns over demand for the new iPhone before its launch, our Zhengzhou site's production capacity for iPhones has continued to grow over the past two years."

Foxconn is claimed to be worried about expanding too far, however, due to the possibility of losing orders to smaller rivals such as Pegatron and Wistron in 2014. Rumors have indicated that Apple is looking to add more manufacturers to its supply chain to keep up with production of phones and tablets, as well as new products, such as the iWatch.
