Microsoft takes Xbox Video service live on web

Microsoft has rolled out a new web portal for its Xbox Video service, allowing users to stream video content through a browser when not at their computer, Xbox console, or mobile device. The new service relies on Microsoft's Silverlight web plug-in, and it streams content in a resolution lower than HD. That means users won't get the quality of video that they can get on Windows 8.1 and Xbox One versions of the service, though they will still have access to their entire Xbox Video libraries.

The new web portal gives access to the whole of Xbox Video's library of titles. Users can view trailers for film and television content, rent video content, and buy content. On the web portal, the content can only be rented and bought in standard definition. Purchases will play in standard definition on the web if a user buys them in high definition, but they will play in high definition if bought in that resolution when played on an Xbox One or Windows 8.1 machine.

Playback started on the web does not sync to a user's other Xbox Video-enabled devices. The service will not retain a user's last-watched piece of content, and movies and television shows will start from the beginning when switching devices.

Microsoft will also be rolling out a Windows Phone 8 version of its Xbox Video service in the near future. That version will also lack HD video support, despite the fact that a number of Windows Phone devices support that resolution. Microsoft has not yet revealed when its Windows Phone version of Xbox Video may see release.
