Google plans updates to YouTube comments to combat spam increase

updated 07:58 am EST, Wed November 27, 2013

Incoming YouTube updates to fight against bad links, impersonation, ASCII art

Google will be making its first major changes to YouTube comments since the company connected the system to Google+. An apparent increase in spam comments on the video streaming service is pushing Google into altering its spam detection system, with the proposed changes likely to affect current protests on YouTube about the Google+ changes.

A post on the official blog states that the new updates will include "better recognition of bad links and impersonation attempts", as well as changing how long comments are displayed underneath videos. A third item on the list, "Improved ASCII art detection," could be seen as Google's way of combating current protests against the comment system changes, one which currently involves a fictional character called Bob and a tank appearing in a considerable number of comments, according to TechCrunch.

Upcoming improvements to the YouTube comments system will include bulk moderation tools for video creators, as well as work on "improving comment ranking and moderation of old-style comments." Though it is not seemingly acknowledging the protests, the post does claim that features introduced in the earlier changes, such as threaded conversations and formatted comments, are "coming to life."
