Qualcomm opens Toq smart watch pre-orders, possible shipping delays

Mirasol smart watch could ship long after original December 2 target

Qualcomm has opened up pre-orders for its Toq smartwatch, ahead of its December 2nd shipping date. The smart watch now appears in the Qualcomm online store as available to buy, though the component producer does advise that the device will be shipping "within 1-3 weeks," meaning that some customers may face a considerable wait for their order.

The Toq uses a 1.55-inch touchscreen Mirasol display that is said to help the watch achieve "multiple days of battery life," at the same time as being visible in bright sunlight. Weighing in at 3.2 ounces, the smart watch can charge its 240mAh battery wirelessly over WiPower LE, and is able to connect to Android 4.03 or later devices over Bluetooth 3.0 for notifications and alerts. It will also have a number of applets preloaded, providing weather and stock information among other details, and can also be used with optional wireless stereo headphones.

Though Qualcomm will be offering the Toq at $350, it is believed that the company is offering it as a proof of concept device to show off its Mirasol display as well as to demonstrate what could be done in the realm of smart watches. It is unlikely to cause much concern to other devices, such as the Pebble and the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
