Google patent outlines automatic responses for social network posts

System could create specific responses based on earlier messages

Responding to social network postings could be easier in the future, according to a patent filing from Google. A listing on the USPTO for the "Automated generation of suggestions for personalized reactions in a social network" advises of a potential system that could suggest appropriate responses to posts and messages, one that takes into account previous messages by the user.

The filing spotted by the BBC suggests that data could be collected about the user's online habits, such as social networks and messaging, as well as what posts are engaged by the user, and their typical responses. Eventually, the system could then make suggestions of potential responses for the user, with the ultimate aim of the messages being indistinguishable from that of the user themselves. The same technology could also be expanded to text messages and e-mails, with users able to just select the generated message to approve and send it.

The system does appear to have some drawbacks if it is implemented as shown in the patent. The suggested messages seem to be too procedurally constructed, giving too much exacting information for a message when a more casual response would suffice. It is also thought that the system could miss out on other important social aspects, such as missing a seemingly unimportant lunchtime appointment.

Such messages could make an appearance on social networks in the future, but it will probably be a considerable amount of time before it becomes useful for normal users.
