Quanta rumored to be handling iWatch, larger iPad production

updated 11:43 am EST, Mon November 25, 2013

Pilot production of iWatch allegedly underway

Taiwanese supplier Quanta Computer will be producing both the iWatch and a larger iPad for Apple in 2014, DigiTimes claims. The iWatch is said to be shipping first, in the second calendar quarter. Pilot production of the watch is allegedly already underway, but suffering low yields, resulting in the Q2 timeframe. Quanta is said to be competing with Foxconn and Inventec for orders, although only the first two have been officially invited into the supply chain.

The bigger iPad is only expected to arrive sometime in the second half of 2014. Like other outlets, DigiTimes is suggesting that the unit will have a 12.9-inch display. This may potentially cause problems for Quanta and Apple, since the size isn't standard for tablets, and Quanta is also facing the generally complex nature of assembling Apple designs. Products like the iPad are often extremely tightly engineered, leaving little room for error.

Other reports have differed about the release dates for both products. Some have put the iWatch in late 2014, and the larger iPad -- sometimes nicknamed the iPad Pro -- earlier in the year. The nature of the Pro remains a mystery beyond the anticipated screen size.
