Next-gen Kindle Paperwhite said to arrive Q214 with sharper screen

New Kindle may be on the way with lighter design

Amazon may release a new version of its Kindle Paperwhite e-reader as early as the second quarter of next year, according to a new report. TechCrunch reported on Sunday that the online retail giant is prepping a new Kindle Paperwhite for release early next year, one with a number of hardware improvements and design changes. The new device could sport an e-ink screen with a resolution of 300ppi, providing visuals nearly 50 percent denser than the current model.

The new Paperwhite may also have a front screen that is flush with the edges of the device, as opposed to recessed. That screen may also be made of matte glass, not the plastic seen in previous Kindles. These design changes are said to yield a device that is thinner and lighter than previous Kindles.

Other design changes may include a reshaping of the device to bring it in line with Amazon's Kindle Fire line. The newest Kindle Fire devices feature a more angular shape, as well as chamfered edges. They would also feature a power button placed on the rear of the device, as is the case with the new Kindle Fires.

Amazon may also be working on a new font for Kindles, one aimed at increasing readability. The company may also build in an ambient light sensor, which would monitor light levels in an environment in order to adjust screen brightness accordingly. This feature, TechCrunch reports, would time its adjustments in order to sync with the way the average retina expands or contracts, thereby avoiding jarring lighting transitions.
