Alcatel's Idol X+ sports octa-core processor

TCL Corporation, the Chinese company that licenses the Alcatel name for smartphones, has revealed that its forthcoming flagship smartphone will have an octa-core processor. The Idol X+ will be released as a collaboration between TCL and Chinese online retailer, though the release date for the device is as yet unknown. That octa-core chipset is said to be produced by MediaTek, and TCL is expected to pack the device with enough high-end tech in its other aspects to take advantage of the processing power.

The Idol X+ is also said to pack 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera, and a 5-inch 1080p display. The Idol X+ brand has not been established for certain, as GSMInsider notes that it may go as the Alcatel Idol X+ or Alcatel One Touch Idol X+.

Whatever its name, the device will not be alone among octa-core-powered smartphones. Other Chinese vendors are also putting the technology into their device, including Zopo, Mlais, and Green Orange. Those devices will likely launch this week or in the near future. TCL's advantage, though, has wider distribution than its smaller competitors, which will give it the edge in publicizing its wares.

The One Touch Idol X ran Android 4.2.1 upon its release, and the X+ will likely run either that version or a higher one when it hits shelves. When the Idol X+ does appear, it may sport a low price, as did its predecessor. The One Touch Idol X had a starting price of just $350 for its single-SIM variant. The successor is believed to be heading for the same price point.
