Video game legend turns focus to headset gaming

John Carmack, creator of the Doom video game, has left id Gaming, a company he helped found, in order to focus on developing the Oculus Rift gaming headset. Carmack works as the Chief Technology Officer for Oculus, and departing id will allow the gaming legend to put more effort to into the immersive game devices. The Oculus project made a splash last year when its Kickstarter campaign pulled in more than $2.4 million, far surpassing its original goal of $250,000.

Commenting on the matter through his Twitter account, Carmack said he had wished to remain a technical advisor for id, but "it just didn't work out." Continuing, the game developer said that the split was "probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging."

Carmack had a hand in the creation of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, three seminal titles in gaming history. He has been Oculus' chief technology since August of this year.

TechCrunch noted on Friday the following statement from id Gaming regarding Carmack's departure:

"John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio. John's work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id's tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well."
