16GB and 32GB Retina iPad mini supply tightens

updated 05:31 pm EST, Sat November 23, 2013

All Retina iPad minis now shipping in 5-10 days

The 16GB and 32GB versions of Apple's new iPad mini with Retina display are now shipping in 5-10 days, further demonstrating the tight supply of the smaller tablet. 9to5Mac noted the change in Apple's online store listings on Friday, pointing out that the 16GB and 32GB units had joined the other configurations in the longer ship time. Previously, the units had been shipping in 1-3 business days.

Apple CEO Tim Cook warned listeners during the company's quarterly conference call that the Retina mini could see shortages. Reportedly, the reason for the low supply is the high-resolution Retina display packed into the smaller tablet.

Wireless carriers have also reported low inventories of the device. The Retina mini is expected to be one of the most in-demand devices of this holiday season, and the carriers' own shipment windows illustrate the tight supply. While Apple ships the Retina mini within 5-10 days, the carriers' pages show ship dates between two weeks and a month.

if it were Samsung, they would have been able to pump out millions of them in a matter of weeks. Apple's supply chain is simply too weak to meet rush demand. I'm not saying it's bad. I'm just saying Samsung can do a lot better.

I see no evidence for your statement. None of Samsung's individual products are a) of the same quality as the Retina iPad mini and b) sell in the quantities Apple's individual products do.

You appear to be equating *all* of Samsung's manufacturing output (which covers hundreds of products, and easily dozens when you only count the cell phones and tablets!) against Apple's five primary (mobile) products. Yes, maybe if Samsung only made five products, your theory would be correct. But that's not the case.

Samsung's smartphones and tablets appear to be more plentiful because on an individual-product basis, relatively few people want them.

My local Target had plenty of iPad Mini Retina on Sunday (maybe should have bought one to put on eBay 2 weeks before Christmas). I think the bulk of the units went to retail partners for Black Friday sales.
