Glass eyewear steps closer to optometrists offices

Google has reportedly reached out to a traditional eyewear company to collaborate on potential alternative designs for Google Glass, according to a Wall Street Journal report (sub. required). The companies are also said to be discussing ways to showcase the devices in optometrists offices, hinting at a distribution strategy as the hardware moves beyond the invite-only "Explorer Program."

Although the current Glass design is cautiously labeled a development project, Google has already begun promoting its industrial design. The modular design is shown without lenses, with prescription clear lenses and in sunglass form, with five different frame colors to choose from.

A recent report suggests Rochester Optical is already building alternative frame designs that are based on a modified version of the existing Explorer Edition headset, with a focus on prescription lens integration. It is unclear if the company was directly collaborating with Google to create the prototypes, or working on its own ahead of an anticipated public launch.

Google is expected to bring Google Glass to the market sometime in 2014. In the meantime, participants in the recently expanded Explorer Program can pay $1,500 to try out the current iterations.
